Eyka Stephens

Eyka Stephens brings a variety of educational experiences to the NUA. As a classroom teacher in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), Ms. Stephens received the teacher of the year award and was highlighted as an outstanding educator in the Miami Herald for two consecutive years. While completing a master’s degree in reading, she began teaching at Miami Dade College in the department of college prep for reading and writing. As she began working with adult learners, Ms. Stephens’ passion for professional development emerged. She left one classroom and became a reading specialist for a Pre-K through Sixth grade school with over 35 classrooms. As a continuous learner, Ms. Stephens completed her specialist degree in educational leadership and began teaching on-line reading courses for teachers acquiring their master’s degree at Grand Canyon University. After several years of coaching and mentoring teachers at one school, Ms. Stephens was invited to share her passion for professional development and love of learning as a curriculum specialist for the nearly 300 elementary schools in M-DCPS.

Ms. Stephens is director of instructional services for National Urban Alliance for Effective Education. In this role she works to support education improvement in schools and districts throughout the country as well as supervising a staff of NUA mentors and consultants. She also works in support of college and university professors who partner with the NUA in targeted districts, and presents at education membership conferences.  She is pursuing her doctoral degree in organizational leadership at Nova Southeastern University. While she moves around the country presenting and doing demonstration lessons, Ms. Stephens hopes to spread her love of learning with administrators, teachers, and most importantly, students.

Ms. Stephens has been a member of the Board of Directors for the South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union since 2004.
