Marcella L. Bullmaster-Day, Ed.D.

Marcella L. Bullmaster-Day, Ed.D. is honored to have joined the NUA team because her life’s vocation and enduring passions are learning, teaching, and supporting others in learning and teaching, particularly in U.S. urban schools and communities – right in line with NUA’s mission. She has worked as a teacher, principal, mentor, university professor, and professional development consultant in urban educational contexts since 1974.

Currently Dr. Bullmaster-Day is an Associate Professor and the Assistant Director of the Lander Center for Educational Research at Touro College in New York City. Previously. She served as Senior Research Consultant for Kaplan K12 Learning Services and was Program Chair for Kaplan University’s Graduate School of Education where she developed the conceptual framework and innovative online courses for the University’s Masters Degree in Education. Prior to that, Dr. Bullmaster-Day was Executive Director of Curriculum for Kaplan K12 Learning Services. She has also been an Adjunct Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she taught graduate courses required in degree programs, including Staff Development and School Improvement.

Her three decades in urban education have also included directing large year-round, multi-age youth programs, founding and heading a private elementary school for ten years, serving as a researcher for the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, and teaching in the New York City public school system and at New York University. She has been a professional development consultant in New York through Bank Street College of Education, New Visions for Public Schools, and the Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute.

Dr. Bullmaster-Day holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia. Her publications include District-wide High School Reform: Challenges and Promising Approaches, Learning from Students’ Parents, and collaborations with Linda Darling-Hammond in authoring Rethinking Teacher Leadership Through Professional Development Schools, The Changing Social Context of Teaching in the United States, and Educators of Color.
