Mary Jo Johnson, MA has spent much of her teaching career working with profoundly deaf high school students. Those students who had not been fortunate enough to have a sound language background in American Sign Language often found reading and writing English to be an almost insurmountable challenge.
In her quest to find better ways to teach her students, Ms. Johnson learned about the work of Reuven Feuerstein and trained in the cognitive skills program, Instrumental Enrichment. She grew in her own learning approaches and marks this as a turning point in her career. She began to teach in a new way, coaching students in the skills they need to become active, independent, lifelong learners. Her focus is on searching for meaningful connections and bridging classroom learning to all life situations.
Ms. Johnson has also worked as an educational diagnostician, using Feuerstein’s Learning Potential Assessment Device. She holds a BA in English and Special Education for the Deaf and an MA in Reading Education.
