Seattle Public Schools

NUA enjoyed an eight year partnership with the Seattle Public Schools beginning in 1999with an intense focus on professional development.

  • During that period, the achievement of 10th graders climbed from 60 percent to 80 percent meeting state standards in reading and writing.
  • Achievement for 4th graders increased from 36 percent to 82 percent in reading from 1999-2006.
  • During that same period, writing for 7th graders increased from 36 percent to 65 percent, reading increased from 40.1 percent to 59 percent, and math rose from 30.9 percent to 49 percent.
  • The rises were more significant for 4th and 10 grades. For example, in mathematics 4th grade achievement rose from 35.8 percent to 60 percent and in 10th grade from 24.8 percent to 55 percent.
  • In 2008, 87 percent of the class of 2009 met Washington State Standards for graduation, the highest percentage ever recorded.
  • African American students doubled the achievement of those African American students who were not trained in NUA strategies.

**NUA models and strategies are still employed in professional development by Seattle teachers and coaches who were trained during NUA’s presence in the district. An academic year-long program was developed in 2008 infusing the NUA teaching models and strategies for High Intellectual Performance into the framework of the Balanced Literacy Model in Seattle Public Schools.
