BECOME AN NUA MENTOR

Thank you for your interest in joining the NUA.

We currently do not have vacancies for mentor positions.

However, we continuously seek dedicated and motivated educators who will help us advance the mission of the NUA. Your application will be on file and as soon as we resume our interviews it will be reviewed by our screening committee and you will be notified of the outcome.

NUA educational mentors in the early childhood, elementary, and secondary school levels serve as independent contractors in the areas of literacy and English language learners. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge and skills and document successful experiences:

  • Using a wide range of effective research-based instructional strategies to provide classroom demonstration lessons and to facilitate peer coaching
  • Investigating and applying current urban educational methods
  • Appreciating the importance of incorporating students’ cultural backgrounds into the learning process
  • Providing quality large and small group workshops
  • Assessing the needs of students through grouping and differentiated instructional strategies
  • Meeting the literacy needs of English language learners (for ELL applicants) and grouping, differentiating, and assessing for instruction.

APPLICATION-INDUCTION PROCESS

If you meet the criteria listed above, we welcome you to consider the following checklist before completing the online application:

  1. I have a strong knowledge base in my content area (e.g. literacy, math, science, history, early childhood).
  2. I have at least five years of documented successful classroom teaching experience (K-12).
  3. I have successfully led workshops for classroom teachers (including appropriate handouts and visuals) on the local and regional/national level.
  4. I can make a commitment to working at least twenty six weekdays per year in NUA districts and attend twelve weekday sessions per year for my own NUA professional development.
  5. I understand that as an independent contractor (1099 tax status) working part-time, I will not receive health insurance or other employee benefits.

Submitting a Resume to NUA

Please complete the appropriate application form (download below) and submit along with your most recent 2 page resume via email as attachments. Please send your attachments as Word, pdf, or rtf text file.

IMPORTANT: Please name your resume file as follows - lastname, underscore, resume. For example, if your last name is Miller, your resume file should be named miller_resume..

Application-Induction Process

We will send you confirmation via email once your resume and application have been received. If you meet the required criteria, we will contact you for an interview. A performance interview, in addition to writing samples are required steps to pass before being invited to the NUA Induction Process. We welcome you to consider the following checklist before completing the NUA Mentor application
