We cannot expect the schools to integrate the numerous reform programs if we, in fact, cannot do that ourselves.

The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA) Takes Top Honors at TeleCon XVIII in the Best Direct Broadcast Satellite Production Category

NEW YORK (October 29, 1998) The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education (NUA) at Teachers College, Columbia University took top honors in the Best Direct Broadcast Satellite Production at the TeleCon XVIII gala awards dinner in Anaheim, California on October 27th. TeleCon, the world’s largest conference and trade show devoted to teleconferencing and interactive multimedia communications, is sponsored by Teleconference Magazine. The NUA is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to improving learning outcomes for minority students.

The David and Goliath competition pitted the NUA’s teleconference "Teaching for Intelligence: What Schools Can Do" against those of such giants as IBM, PBS, Arthur Andersen, CNN, the major TV networks, and hundreds of other organizations. The NUA teleconference featured a number of leading thinkers and reformers such as James P. Comer, M.D., Elliot Eisner, Reuven Feuerstein, Howard Gardner, John Goodlad, Jean Houston, Yvette Jackson, Donna Ogle, Robert Peterkin, Ted Sizer, and Dorothy Strickland. The program also included school superintendents Maria Guasp, Waldemar Rojas and John Stanford and students, teachers, administrators and school board members from the Seattle and Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Dr. Eric J. Cooper, Executive Director of the NUA, who attended the awards gala said that he was thrilled that the NUA had won the prestigious award. "The NUA’s collaboration with Skylight/Simon and Schuster and Voyager in sponsoring the annual international Teaching for Intelligence conference is an example of how a nonprofit organization can focus the energy and resources of the private sector towards addressing the needs of both urban and suburban students."

The NUA has affiliations with the following school systems: Chicago, Dayton, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, New York City, Prince George’s County, MD, San Francisco, Seattle, South Huntington, NY, Beacon, NY, and Stamford, CT.
